May's Book of the Month

Hello Everyone! I chose the picture posted above because it reminds me of reading to my daughter Mareena when she was little. Every afternoon until she was about eight or nine years old, we would take one of her books that she wanted to read or that she was reading and we would curl up together on my big bed.

We would spend an hour or so reading a chapter of her book, and then take a nap together. Her absolutely favorite author at that time was an English author named Enid Blyton. Ahh, nice memories...

My picks for 'Books of the Month' will be decidedly more adult these days, but they will be from almost any genre. May's Book of the Month is:

The Legacy by Jere Cunningham
Published as: The Legacy in November 1977
Publisher: Fawcett

Birth Name: Jere Pearson Cunningham, Jr.
Born: 1943

Canonical Name: Jere Cunningham
Pseudonyms: None

I've just started blogging about the books I've read this month, and despite reading several books already, The Legacy by Jere Cunningham was only the fourth book that I've blogged about. I've had this book on my TBR shelf since April 1, 2009 and it took me a week to read. It's a definite keeper for me.

Jere Cunningham - The Legacy

4. The Legacy by Jere Cunningham (1977)
Length: 254 pages
Genre: Horror
Started: 22 May 2009
Finished: 29 May 2009
Where did it come from? From a Library Book Sale
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 1 April 2009
Why do I have it? I like horror and Jere Cunningham is a new author for me.

David was chilled to the bone when he read the words in his father's diary about the old blind man, Sprague. Now David, his wife, Sandy and his daughter Melanie have returned to David's childhood home to claim David's inheritance. All he knew about Sprague was that he somehow had caused David's father's death by reading his thoughts. Now, Sprague lives down the road from David and his family and is a virtual recluse.

David feels terribly threatened as strange occult happenings begin in the woods near his home and he can feel the danger grow as he, his wife and daughter, experience Sprague's evilness for themselves. I really enjoyed this horror story and give it an A+!

This is the story of a woman scorned. When Leslie Stewart meets handsome governor of a southern state, Oliver Russell, she is convinced she will marry him. What follows is a story of revenge that leads from America's bastions of power to the world of newspaper publishing. I give this story a B+! It was a page-turner.

Edgar Freemantle is a man with anger problems due to an accident that almost killed him. As a result, his marriage has split up and he is now living on Duma Key for a year by himself. He takes up painting as a hobby and finds that he is brilliant at it. So good, in fact, that he is possessed by an unearthly desire to continue painting. That is until his paintings begin to possess others driving them to suicide and murder. I enjoyed this book very much and give it an A+! Although I thought it was a tad long in parts. I would definitely recommend this book to others.
